Zamora

The main routes through Zamora expose visitors to some rather uninspiring landscape, but Zamora does has several hidden secrets, not least of which is a beautiful plaza built around a church. With plenty of cafes and bars around the edge, it's a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

Visit:  the River Dureo, Arribes

The River Duero has some splendid banks and gorges, ringing with the sound of birds. The Route of the Duero joins the impressive town of Toro with the Portuguese border. Toro itself is replete with Romanesque-style churches, monasteries and palaces, and is a must to visit - if only to enjoy the view from the escarpment on which it sits looking down onto the river below.

Further along this route, beyond Zamora, is a stunning gorge known as the Arribes which reaches heights of more than 200 meters. The Route of Silver is a marvellous historical way once stretching from Sevilla to Gijón on the north coast.

Towards Galicia in the north are some spectacular mountain towns and villages displaying the Celtic influence of these parts; the Puebla de Sanabria, in particular, is worth a visit.
