Described by some as "Spain's most graceful city", Salamanca offers the finest Plaza Mayor in the country. Bullfights were staged here well into the nineteenth century, the best views offered by the elegant balconies that surround the plaza on all sides. Being home to the third-oldest university in Europe after Bologna and Paris, the city is a feast of architectural grandeur.

Just so you know: A curious history has "Lunes de Aguas", at Easter Monday in Salamanca: in the middle-ages people crossed the river in boats decorated with flowers to bring back to town the prostitutes, who have not been allowed to stay there during the 40 days of Lent. Today the festival is rather of familiar character
