Murcia

Murcia A small region situated in the south east of Spain. Together with the neighboring Andalucian province of Almeria to its south, this is the driest region in Spain and one of the driest areas in Europe. Still, the few rivers that flow through this arid landscape help make possible the growth of vegetables and rice, on which much of the region’s prosperity depends. The other mainstay of the region's economic fortunes is tourism. The overwhelming majority of visitors who come here stretch their towels out on one of the dozens of excellent beaches that sprinkle this 'Costa Cálida' coastline.

Visit:  Aguilas, San Pedro del Pinatar, Cartagena

Aguilas is a great palace to go for those who want to escape the masses.  You will find many unspoiled beaches and coves. Playa Amarilla is a good spot to escape the spread of modern development

Cover yourself in mud when you visit San Pedro del Pinatar.  Apparently, the mud has therapeutic powers, good for the skin and said to relieve the symptoms of rheumatism.

Inland, places of interest include Lorca and Moratella, a very pretty rural village almost in Castilla La Mancha. From here you can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and vast forests.

Just so you know:  The largest cities of the region are Murcia and Cartegena. Cartagena is not as attractive as its neighboring Murcia, but it has a welcoming history with in the city.  Once you see the medieval streets it is a welcoming sight.  Curiously, the city owes its name to the great Carthaginian leader Hannibal who obviously decided that one Carthage in northern Africa wasn't enough.
